Wedding :: Lee & Jeff :: Akumal Caribe (Cancun), Mexico

During her junior year of high school, my wife, Maritt, made friends with the Gilliland family who lived a few blocks down the street. Every morning, Maritt used to pick up Lee and her sister in her Ford Escort station wagon and take them to school. Lee and Maritt have since been to Alaska together twice (once on an outdoor adventure, then to gut fish for a season), they attended the same university, and have enjoyed numerous climbing trips around the west. Basically, they are great friends with a rich history.

When Lee and Jeff announced their wedding plans, it was no suprise that they had chosen an international destination as Lee has traveled on nearly every continent. This last weekend, about 30 or so of Lee and Jeff's family and friends met up in Akumal, Mexico, which is a little over an hour south of Cancun.

The wedding was so much fun. Lots of smiles, dancing, good food, strong margaritas, and a skinny dipping session ended the night! It was also a blast hanging out on the white sandy beaches with everyone, sitting waist deep in tropical waters drinking cervesa, and snorkeling with sea turtles on the days before and after their wedding.

Here are some of the photos from our trip:

Wedding :: Sarah & Matt :: Nestldown, California Bay Area

This past Saturday, Matt and Sarah were married at a most spectacular location: Nestldown in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Matt and Sarah's wedding was filled with great tradition and energy. We enjoyed splendid weather--especially considering the day before was raining cats and dogs!
Here are some of their images....

The Art of Living

On my way back from Monterey this last Monday, I picked up a copy of The Surfer's Journal. My mom's family is from Santa Cruz which is where I learned how to surf--this issue had an article about Jack O'neil, founder of O'Neil wetsuits which is based out of the Santa Cruz area. In the article there were many references to buddhism and one quote that hit home:

"The Master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence in whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both." -Zen Buddhist Text

This quote explains photography for me.

This past weekend, my good friend Stephanie McCord created flowers for her first wedding since moving to Idaho. She was on cloud nine! It was really fun to hear her excitement and know that her work was her play, her labor her leisure!

Hillary Mayberry, another super talented wedding photographer here in the Wood River Valley, stepped in for me as I was in Monterey and shot images of Steph's creations. If you are looking for someone to create incredible flowers for your wedding or event, give Steph a ring at 208.578.2080. Here are some of the pictures:

Wedding :: Sarah & Kendall :: Monterrey & Carmel, California

Originally, I was hired to photograph Kendall & Sarah's wedding here in Ketchum. About month ago our valley experienced a wildfire that ended up burning close to 50,000 acres of forest to the west of Ketchum. No structures were lost nor was anyone hurt--it was an amazing fight.

During the fire Kendall and Sarah called to tell me that they had a change of plans--they didn't want to risk being surrounded by smokey hills and they were going to be married elsewhere. Two weeks after their cancellation, they asked if I would come down to Monterrey, California, as their wedding photographer!

What a great choice they made--Monterey was 65 degrees and sunny while Ketchum was cold and snowy!

Kendall & Sarah's ceremony was held at the Rocky Point Restaurant which lies above a seaside cliff 10 miles south of Carmel. It could have the best view on the west coast. After the ceremony, Kendall wanted to get down near the cliffs edge for portraits--I had the same idea! I have to say that Sarah is one of the toughest brides I have photographed, she navigated steep hillsides, around poison oak, though boulders, and walked right next to 150' cliffs for portraits. Extreme wedding photography! It was probably a bit much to ask and do, but we did get some awesome images.
